Valentine Mug Rug
I’ve been going through boxes, and closets, and trunks. Tossing, donating, and organizing. Preparing to move. (Of course, our house didn’t sell, nor is it on the market anymore. But it doesn’t hurt to be ready!)
Anyhow, I have a drawer in my Creative Cave that has “orphan blocks”–quilt blocks that I made but never used. Several are from testing the heart strips blocks and the heart log cabin blocks. Which made me think, time to use them! It’s almost Valentine’s Day!
I found three that were in shades of pink which I thought were pretty perfect for Valentines. I also had matching binding that I had saved and some embroidered heart blocks that were the right size. So I decided to turn a few into mug rugs.
Mug rugs are just glorified coasters. You can put both your mug of coffee AND your donut on the rug with room to spare! (Or your beer and pretzel, or wine and cheese)
And with this first one that I made, I used both batting and insul-brite* in the quilt sandwich so it could also be used for a hot pad. (Insul-brite is essentially batting with an layer of metallized film!)
I made a quilt sandwich by using “Odif 505 Temporary Adhesive”* to glue the layers together–top fabric, insul-brite, batting, and back fabric. Then I did some quilting to stitch all the layers together.
I put the binding on the same way as I do on a large quilt.

So pretty! And Heartfelt! Think I’ll make at least one more to celebrate the day of Hearts.
