Quilty Progress
Sooooo
I am giving myself a little break on finishing up the second “Cats in Pajamas” quilt. It’s all basted and ready to be quilted. Maybe next week. Or maybe when I get back to DC. I would love to try out quilting with my Juki that’s in the apartment.
I started working on three other quilts….cause I gotta keep busy!
I’m making two new Riley quilts.
Here’s the original that I made for Riley over 10 years ago.

I already had all the denim cut out. I had some Tilda Autumn line plus I picked up some yardage at the local quilt shop.
Then I didn’t think that was enough variety so ordered a fat quarter bundle of Tilda on Etsy.
Four denim pieces and four calico Tilda per block along with a solid cream sashing.
Eight blocks done. I need twelve per quilt!
I already have all the pieces cut out, just need to stitch it together.
You can click here to get to the original Riley quilt post and instructions. I will eventually put new instructions up with the calico fabric. Eventually…..
I want to put twin beds in the granddaughters room so am making two Riley quilts. Although I do not have said twin beds, I am passively looking on FB Marketplace. I am putting the final touches on a kitchen table I bought there last week and I have a dresser and nightstands to refinish for Lauri’s guest bedroom. Then I will start really searching for two matching twin beds. Gotta have priorities!
Anyhow, the third quilt I started is the Moda Blockheads 6. I am using denim for the background and starting out using all the Tilda pieces that are not floral. The fat quarter bundle I ordered has some woven pieces which I have not used in a quilt before and am discovering that they are a little tricky to work with especially paired with denim. When I run out of the Tilda fabric I plan to hit some of my scrap fabric.
I’m not going in any order on the BH quilt. I started out with Block 6 then followed up with 1 and 2.
Most of the blocks are 9″ finished but both 6 and 7 are 18″. Bigger should be easier, right? Not so!
Block 7 came out yesterday and I thought I’d just whip that up in no time and add it to my little Blockheads design wall. Nope. I had nothing but trouble with that block. I was determined to finish it but early evening I ran out of bobbin thread which was definitely a message from the sewing godesses that it was time to quit!
Here’s how much I finished…..

I made a lot of mistakes and wasted a lot of fabric. (That little pile on the right corner is just part of the messed up pile!) And now I’m rethinking the fabric choices I made. I will most likely be remaking the middle piece. It just doesn’t fit in! Maybe I’ll use more of the gingham–but that is a problem for tomorrow!

I love the look of the denim and cotton squares! I’ve made denim quilts using 5″ pieces so I’m wondering if the smaller pieces – especially the triangles are more difficult to sew?
The Riley denim and calico is no problem sewing but the smaller pieces in the Moda BH quilt are difficult. The seams are really thick where the small pieces meet and my Babylock sewing machine was having a lot of trouble in the last block I did. I will probably use the Brother that I typically use for bags and totes to do any more of these blocks.
