Haven’t posted about Moda BH 6 for several weeks. But I’ve been working at it a little.

From the beginning, I had plans to make a table topper for my kitchen table with the finished blocks. I was using denim that I had been donated, plus woven fabric and quilting cottons from a Tilda fat quarter pack. Making the blocks was a challenge–every step of the way. Wovens and denims are not friendly!

I had just enough of the Tilda fabric for the first ten blocks.

I brought the ten blocks together with some off-white denim from the jeans stash. Then put a sky blue Kona cotton border around all that.

Used some gingham fat eighths I had been saving for the backing. (I really love gingham!)

Then basted all the layers together.

I’ve made denim quilts before and they always turn out amazing. And I expected this small quilt to be equally great! But while I was doing the quilting, I could tell that the borders were going very wonky. Actually beyond wonky.

It was so bad that I could tell it would take drastic measures to save this quilt. I cut the entire sky blue border off. That didn’t help. Then I cut part of the white denim border off. Still wavy but not quite as bad.

Added a really cute rainbow fabric binding but that quilt edge was still not good.

Pinned it up on the design wall. Hoping maybe gravity would help flatten it out.

Nope. Blocking does not work on quilts!

Threw it in the washer and then dryer. Went to a meeting. Terry had put it on the couch and when I got home it greeted me in all of its wonkiness. Okay, maybe not quite as bad. It really crinkled up quite nicely. And Athena approved it!

Of course, after removing the borders, the quilt was no longer big enough for the kitchen table. Scheesh. I tried it on a table in the living room. With a little Fall decor, not too bad.

But I already have a Fall table topper for that table.

I’m disappointed. I should be better than this. I’ve been quilting a very long time and should have recognized that the borders needed remedied before I basted the quilt. Disappointed I possibly wasted both the gingham and the rainbow binding. I’ve had them saved for a special project.

I’m considering cutting it up for something else. A jacket? Vest? Totes?

For now I am leaving it on the couch. I have other projects I would like to work on.

And in the meantime, Athena does love quilts!
