“Squirrelly Girl” Pillow
Waaaaay back. A whole month ago. I posted about “Squirrelly Girl” fabric by Bunny Hill Designs for Moda.
I really wanted the fabric but it wasn’t available yet in yardage.
I was very persistent and checked the Fat Quarter Shop every day and FINALLY I could buy it!
Yippee!
Since I knew I wouldn’t have time to make an entire quilt before the arrival of autumn, I thought I’d just use it for smaller projects. So only ordered one yard of three different patterns.
It is so fun!
And this is my first project!
SQUIRRELLY GIRL PILLOW!
This is my FAVORITE pillow form size. Because it’s perfect for naps on the couch. I have made several covers for this one already. And, just like me, now it needs some new Fall clothes.
It’s 10″ x 24″. Actually it was 12″ x 24″ when I first made the pillow form but it seems to have lost some of it’s stuffing. Probably napped it out.
The sweet little squirrel print is about 5″ square. So I fussy cut three of those vignettes and made 9″ finished stars. I followed Amy from Diary of a Quilter’s directions to make the stars. I quite often recommend her blog for quilt guidance and I’ve been looking for good clear instruction for making flying geese. Her tutorial explains what sizes are necessary for different dimensions. There’s even a PDF to download with the different sizes.
After I made three, I realized that my math was way off and I could only use two of them for a 24″ wide pillow. Duh! Now I have to find another project for the third star! But anyhow….
I did really simple walking foot quilting using this variegated thread.
I like to put minky on the back of the pillow cover because it is so soft and comfy. (For my naps.) I originally bought this minky Fox Faux Fur to create many little faux foxes. But it was just too difficult to work with for all those curves and corners. Minky is really of the devil. Even using a walking foot it slips and slides. And when cutting it to use, it sheds everywhere. Whenever I cut up Minky, I have that Elmer Fudd song stuck in my head as he’s planning on shooting Bugs Bunny….”Kill the wabbit….Kill the wabbit” Cause the debris left behind using faux fur is like I skinned a wabbit.
And even with all that, I thought it would be perfect for the back of this envelope-style pillow. (Cause I have to use it for something!)
Did you know that according to Instagram, October is
Squirrel Awareness Month?
I’m thinking that using Squirrelly Girl Fabric for this pillow is quite appropriate. After putting it all together, I had to take my new pillow cover around to model throughout the house.
And the fox twins, Fuzzy and Furry (the only two that I actually completed from the dozens I planned to make from this Fox Faux Fur) had to come out and check out the pillow.
Now I need to clean out all that faux fur from the inside of my sewing machine and every other nook and cranny in my sewing room.
