Sky Quilt
My first quilt for 2019! Which should have been my last quilt for 2018 since it was a Christmas gift.
I had plenty of time to get it done but I had issues while making this quilt. I can make flying geese. Easy-Peasy. But 152. Not so easy-peasy. And figuring out how to trim everything up–my quilting was nice and straight until I did the trimming. Yikes! Not going to show you that!
I finished it on January 2nd. Just in time for Jessica and Andrew to take it home after their holiday visit.
I pinned this quilt a few months ago. I truly love Zen Chic and Brigitte Heitland’s designs.
And then my daughter Jes pinned it from my board. So through a few quick emails I offered to make it for her and Andrew for Christmas.
YES!
This is the first time I have ever bought a quilt pattern. I like to design my own but I really liked this quilt. (Yes, I have done three Quilt-A-Longs on the Internet but I didn’t buy them and I learned so much!) This quilt was marked as a “beginner” level quilt. (NOT TRUE!) I ordered all of the suggested fabrics from the Fat Quarter Shop which included two charm packs from the Spotted fabric line by Zen Chic. Also a 1/2 yard of Spotted in graphite for the binding and 4 yards of Bella White.
Then when I screwed up the first time I ordered two more Spotted charm packs from Amazon. (I didn’t realize I was supposed to get two flying geese from each charm. Duh! I actually read the directions first!) And I still didn’t have enough of all of the colors that I needed even though I did it right that time. So I substituted a few colors here and there.
Anyhow. It’s finished. And very pretty! And Jessica and Andrew love it!
Jessica wanted to turn it into a wall hanging but I suggested it was a little too big. It’s supposed to be 58″ x 58″. When I got done squaring it up and trimming it, it was more like 57″ x 55″. Whoops!
I’m making her a wall hanging using just this corner. Hoping the second time I make these flying geese I don’t have quite as much trouble!
One more snap!
Although I had issues. I really like this quilt and the fabric. I have already ordered a bunch more from Fat Quarter Shop for the wall hanging and maybe something for me! (I’m almost over the trauma of being 151 flying geese!)
One quilt done for 2019!

Great job! They love it. Can’t wait to see it closeup
Thanks Terry! I love it too. I think I’ll eventually make something similar for myself. One of my favorite quilts!
Love this quilt. I will have to try it myself
I love this quilt. I made it for my daughter and her husband but would like to make one for me.
I’m inspired by the number of flying geese you had to make. I have to make 180 for my quilt design. Looking for tips on making a bunch at a time. Your quilt is absolutely amazing and beautiful. Thanks for sharing your masterpiece. ❤️❤️
That quilt was a nightmare! I totally didn’t know what I was getting into. But it turned out really nice. Very bright and happy. Plus daughter loves it! I would like to make it again now that I’m better at flying geese. Now I use a “Quilt in a Day” template for flying geese. Makes it easier. There is a method for making more than one at a time but I haven’t had much luck with it. 180 geese! Yikes! Good Luck! Thanks for reading and commenting!
