Embrace the Mess
Okay. Gotta admit that I got that title from “Only Murders in the Building”. I know everyone has already watched it but I’m just now. I’m behind in all facets of my life!
I haven’t wrote an organization post for awhile and thought it was about time to revisit that category because my sewing room is moving! Again!
Just right across the hall. It’s a little bigger than my dining room that I was using but ALL of my interests and hobbies are tucked away into this room …..sewing, photography, web design, music…… and it’s also the office for Terry and me.
I was set up in the dining room for about 18 months. It’s a good spot with just enough room for all my sewing needs. But I hated that it was the first room that anyone coming in the front door encountered. I consider myself organized but when I’m working on a quilt, a tote, and perhaps one more project, there is some clutter. (Maybe a lot of clutter) and no way to hide it without putting everything away which is not good for my creativity vibe.
And while, this room is right across from the dining room and right there at the front door–it has DOORS!
Some stuff has to move out to fit my sewing tables. Mainly, I down sized my baby grand. I just don’t play it enough to justify the space it takes. If you need a beautiful piano, it’s on consignment at Paramore Music in Ocala. And to my friends that think they won’t need to hear me playing holiday music badly at future Christmas parties, I bought a digital piano which is portable. Yes I can play music poorly at your house!
I don’t have everything organized yet. With the exception of my music corner and Miss Kitty’s spot!
While I’m trying to get the rest of the space organized, I have to give a big shout out to these containers. They perfectly fit in the Ikea Kallax. I keep all my notions, zippers, different projects, and fabric that is less than one yard in them. I must have two dozen of these babies. I’ve had them for many years and I think they came from Walmart. Because that’s the only store we have in Homosassa!
I’ve been able to continue all of my projects while in the middle of moving and chaos because of my two rolling carts. I’d have more if I had a place to store them. One I use for my Cricut and drawing supplies. I like to use the Cricut on my cutting table and when I set it up, I just roll the tools over to it. Same thing if I’m drawing a new design at my desk. There is the cart! I have another place where I store all the paper but it’s not quite organized enough to get a picture of yet.
The second rolling cart is my moveable sewing station. I keep my pins, clips, and sewing tools on the top shelf. The second shelf has all the feet and accessories for the Brother PQ1500SL. Bottom shelf holds my current project. It is so convenient. No matter where I’m sewing, I can pull that cart up to my machine and stitch away!
In the next few weeks I’m hoping to get the entire room neat, organized, and efficient. While I already have almost everything I need, I’ve got to deal with a couple of issues that will cost some bucks. First, the room is dark. Terry has always called it my cave. (So I call it my “Creative Cave”.) But I really need to add some lighting. The second issue is my sewing chair died. It started out as Terry’s office chair and when he retired I grabbed it and recovered it with Rifle Paper Company Fabric. The hydraulics broke in it and I’m way too tall to be sewing at the lowest level! If anyone has any recommendations for either, let me know.
