Scrappy Christmas Stockings
I’ve been planning on making new Christmas Stockings for ohhhhhh, probably five years now.
I made these Christmas Stockings with burlap, because at the time I had a lot of burlap.
Sent them to my ND daughter-in-law, Lauri. (The tutorial is on my other blog from September 25 2014) Made a fifth stocking for Adley when she was born. I had planned on making a set for myself but….nah…..I just couldn’t bring myself to sew up another batch of burlap!
Then I thought I wanted some elegant white velvet stockings with white embroidery and white fur on the top and pom poms. Made one. Wasn’t what I wanted.
A few weeks ago I noticed these adorable Christmas Stockings on Instagram with the label, #SunnyChristmasSAL So I followed that hashtag. And was smitten!
I followed through to the blog post and discovered SunnyDaySupply and the Sunny Stocking Sew Along. The sew along was already over but I’m okay with that.
You can find her pattern and tutorial at this post!
And even better, the stocking comes in two sizes. I decided to make the Half-Pint Stocking.
Now. I have to tell you that I made six patchwork socks and a tree skirt way back in 90s. I had a bit of a country vibe going on. I wasn’t a quilter yet but I have always sewn. I used those stockings for several years but grew a wee bit bored with them and stuck them in a tote. Which followed me around the South for at least six moves. They were haunting me. Why don’t you love me anymore? It’s not you, it’s me. But I won’t toss you. Promise. So I was rather surprised that I loved these stockings from Sunny Supply. Cause they are a little bit “country” and I think I’m more “rock ‘n roll”. I dug out the old stockings and tree skirt and said, “we can be friends again”. If you’ve been listening to Country lately, you gotta admit that it’s got a Rock ‘n Roll vibe.
So onto the stockings. I started using up bits and pieces that have been left over from Christmas sewing from many many years.
The stockings in the above photo aren’t in the order that I made them. First, I made these little hexies. Have I mentioned that I love hexies? I enjoy sitting there watching mindless TV and hand-stitching them. This is a 1″ hexie. I made a bunch of them…this is just a representative of what stitched up!
Using the pattern, I cut fabric and batting. Pin basted. Stitched close to the edges with the wrong side of the fabric on the batting. Then I arranged the hexies and stitched them down along all the edges.
I couldn’t decide which way the stocking should face. Rather than overthinking the issue which I am apt to do, I put the design on both sides. Problem solved.
The only thing I changed from SunnySupply’s instructions was how I added the lining. I put the lining inside the stocking, wrong sides together. Stitched along the top just to hold the pieces together then added quilt binding around the top.
Next up was this Christmas tree stocking. These were leftover from a quilt I made about three years ago. I don’t remember why I made two too many but they were perfect for this stocking.
For this one I cut out the batting with the pattern and then placed the tree block and stitched it in place. Next up I just stitched random strips around the trees using the “Quilt as you go” method. (More on that Thursday–if I get the post finished!)
The Gingerbread Man stocking was inspired by my annual Christmas cookie baking party. The Most Happiest Day of the Year. I used a cookie cutter to make the applique. Again, I just stitched this on to the stocking batting. Buttons and then embroidery were added after I did some random quilting.
I based the last stocking on my “Be Merry and Bright” quilt, using the same fabrics and the star pattern.
I had planned on making six stockings in six days but that didn’t quite happen. Only finished four. I would really like to make the “clamshell” and the “diamond” layout but it would have taken extra time to learn how to do that. I needed those stockings done NOW!
Cause I had guests coming in. For the “most happiest day of the year”!
