Quilty Progress
This week I’m ALL about progress!
A few weeks ago Terry brought a bunch of my unfinished projects down from my former sewing room. This was one of them.
This is the beginning of “Scrappy Times 3”. All ready to start stitching together before I fell and smushed my knee. More than seven hundred 2 1/2″ squares. The idea behind my scrappy times quilt series is to use what I have in my fabric stash during these pandemic times. This one is using some of the denim from my hoard and small bits of cotton fabric left from the first two scrappy times quilts.
I really forgot all about it until Terry carried the tray with the bits down to my new sewing room. Whoops! The hard part–cutting up those pieces–is done so I’ll start sewing these together soon. I’m looking forward to getting back to this scrappy quilt!
Just in case you forgot….here’s the first two Scrappy Times Quilts:
Onto my SEW SO SLOW stitching. I’ve been hand-stitching a Christmas Hexie quilt in the evenings while we are watching Netflix. (Most recent binge is all five seasons of Schitt’$ Creek.)
I started out with not much of a plan and after making a bunch of these hexies I thought I probably needed to pull something together. I tried drawing it out on graph paper but that was impossible due to the six sides. (Duh–graph squares are squares!) Finally turned to Adobe Illustrator for the design plan. I’m not all that good with this software but was able to fumble through it and make a bunch of six-sided shapes and put them into a pattern. Felt so much better to have a goal! I haven’t decided what those gold hexies will be yet but I already have the rest of the pieces ready to go!
I have a temporary design wall in my new sewing room now. (Just batting thumb tacked up–but it does the job!) I immediately put up my Christmas Hexie quilt pieces following my new design.
Since this pic, I have three rows hand-stitched together. Making progress–sew so slow–but progress!
Not so much progress made on the Moda Block Head 3 quilt-a-long. Yikes! I made block 33 and then went to move onto 34 and pulled some fabric to use and read the directions. 125 pieces. HSTs and Flying Geese. I’d already had a frustrating day. Ah. No. Not today. Maybe next week!
And, I digress on my progress theme…..
I love looking at fabric on Instagram. It is a huge time suck. Even worse than pinterest. I’ve been following Art Gallery, Moda, and Riley Blake along with a bunch of their designers and other quilt makers.
Found this fabric and thought it would be perfect for an Autumn themed project.
It has a damask with Squirrel shapes! What! But it’s not available in yardage yet. Dang! It’s September! I bought my Christmas fabric in July! So fall fabric should have been sold in March! Oh well. By the time it’s available, I’ll be onto something else. (I’ll save money!) But it is cute! There’s even a squirrel softie pattern available which I just might need to buy!
And why would I possibly want fabric based on bushy tailed rodents? Much to my dismay, my husband feeds the squirrels. And now we have a lot of them! I’m pretty sure that there are several generations milling around the squirrel feeder now! A squirrel themed quilt would be appropriate! Or at least a pillow!
One last thing. Back to PROGRESS! I have three more weeks on crutches but can put weight on that smushed but pinned together knee. PROGRESS! Only three more weeks! Yippee! I feel like I’m coming in on the home stretch!
Hope you are making some progress somewhere somehow!

Love all the progress you have made on your quilting and also especially on your healing! I’m sure Terry has played a big part in your recovery too. Keep hanging in there. Light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks Terry! I am so happy that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!(hoping that it’s not a train) This has been quite the ordeal! But I have gotten a lot of sewing done!
Hey Kathy. I too am making the Moda Blockheads quilt. I hope we can compare them. I choose not to include the appliqué blocks, although I do love hand appliqué, as you know. I found other 8″ blocks to use in their place. I enjoy reading your posts!
I would love to see your quilt, Cathy! Lots of fun!
