Project Updates
As I mentioned last Thursday I have a bunch of unfinished projects that I want to finish before I start anything new.
So I am dedicating the month of August to finishing all my UFOs! (that’s a clever quilters term for unfinished objects!)
I started out by cleaning and organizing my sewing room.
Decided this guy has to go downstairs. The little air plant is just not thriving even with all the light I get in there! Sorry little buddy, it’s for your own good. You will make new friends in your new window! Actually, I’ll be right there everyday when I do dishes!
After cleaning and moving stuff, I went through some of my storage containers to see what I could see.
This UFO I had COMPLETELY forgotten about:
I had thrown it into a basket of yarn that I use for pom poms. What!!!!
I started this a VERY LONG time ago. It might have been 2000 or 2001. I had pulled a muscle in my back. I wasn’t quilting at that time and couldn’t do much more than watch TV. And eat junk food. And drink wine. (Kind of like I am now with the stress fracture in my foot except now I quilt. And eat junk food. And drink wine.)
Started this tablecloth as a gift for a friend. There are 28 6″ squares there. Guess that’s how many I finished before my back healed.
It’s about 17 years too late to give this as that birthday gift and I don’t think I could find the same thread. (And even if I did I do not even want to make another 53 squares to finish up the tablecloth) But I thought it might be a cool Christmas table runner. Once I crocheted all the squares together (7 x 3) it would be 49″ x 18″. And that would be easy!
Incidentally I used to pull that muscle in my back fairly regularly. Haven’t done it since that time almost two decades ago. I started doing yoga and strengthened all those core muscles. Yeah me!
Next up,
Finished pulling the “Leisure Suit Larry” quilt completely apart. Here are 65 damaged blocks!
Now I’m putting it back together with new polyester knit bits!
And the Tallinn fabric quilt which features fierce tigers….
Here’s the design rendering:
I’m pretty hi-tech. I was a network analyst back when I had a real job and got paid real money. And I love new software and all the techy devices. But I have not bought quilt design software. I think I just kind of like drawing on graph paper, coloring, scribbling out mistakes.
I based the design on a free pattern from Craftsy called Starry Brights. It wasn’t big enough for this quilt so after several tries, I finally figured out how to enlarge the templates.
And the last UFO is the embroidery/applique that I’ve been adding to this shirt. This will possibly always be a “work-in-progress”. I finished the sun embroidery and wore the shirt while it was chilly. Now I’m adding the tree which will include a whole lot more embroidery. Then I’ll probably move onto the front of the shirt.
It looks off-center but this is just part of the entire design.
I’ve been having trouble with Heat ‘n Bond lite. It’s not holding very well. I even bought a new package since I thought the yardage I had might be getting old so it wasn’t fusing anymore. But I had the same problem with this tree. I had planned on hand-embroidering around the tree but decided to machine-stitch around every piece. Now everything is secure!
And other than two new blocks for the “Fall into a QAL” that will be introduced in August, that’s what I’ll be working on!
