Organizing in 2023
I’ve “gifted” myself the month of January to get my creative cave organized, efficient, and pretty. I might still be sewing but mainly working on this room.
Two of my most popular posts are regarding thread organization. One is for my cotton threads for quilting and the other is for polyester threads. Now I’m sharing ideas for the rest of my sewing/crafting space that you might find useful.
Last week I started a major clean up. Moving all of my acoustic pieces, music books, and my digital keyboard to the guest room so I could have a display wall in my creative cave. Now I’m attempting to make better use of the creative space.
I do not like working in clutter so I try to keep all the supplies in control, hidden, and stored where I can find them. I bought this armoire almost 20 years ago. It was probably the first purchase for this house back when we moved in. It’s incredibly large and heavy and when I bought it I knew it was totally perfect. And it still is. It was for my computer and all of my files. Of course, as my monitors got bigger, my equipment outgrew the space. If you are lucky enough to have an old outdated cabinet, it can be totally perfect to hide all of the necessary supplies!
And here is the inside!
I’m storing my Serger and the Brother PQ1500SL here when I am not using them. Cricut mats are hung with command strip hooks on the inside of the doors. Also all those boxes hold sewing supplies and quilting fabrics sorted by colors.
I keep my paper cutter on the keyboard tray. I have to hide the wool pressing mat there because the kitten/cat LOVES LOVES LOVES chewing and shredding wool.
On the top of the armoire I have baskets with different types of interfacing and fusible fleece.
I keep the top to my pressing table to the left of the armoire when I’m not using it along with my step stool and baskets with my denim hoard.
I’m pleased with my cutting table setup so no changes there. It’s almost all from Ikea–table, cabinets, magnetic bar for the scissors, even those magazine holders which hold many of my patterns. I painted, stenciled, and labeled them years ago–I wanted to get more but they are no longer available.
I’m happy with my Cricut organization. Like all crafts, the Cricut needs so many accessories. In the following picture, the two boxes on the upper left are from Stamp ‘n Storage. They fit into my Ikea Kallax units. But–warning–they are pricey. I tried to figure out how to do paper tray storage myself and ran some ideas by Terry. After considering all the options, he said “buy the box”. So I did. That one holds paper. The other box holds vinyl rolls and more Cricut supplies. I keep all my other paper crafting and drawing stock on this cart so I can roll it to where ever it is needed.
I have a second cart that I use for sewing equipment like scissors, rippers, pins, and clips. Also the iron is on the bottom of the cart and the middle shelf has threads and other supplies that I’m using for the current project.
(Joanne’s had rolling carts on sale last week. I really wanted to get a pink one but I couldn’t rationalize another cart. I use the two I have all the time, but I just didn’t have enough things to justify cart number three.)
And finally last for this post, this stand holds office supplies, camera equipment, miscellaneous fabrics, my Babylock sewing machine and patterns. Along with a bunch of other really important stitchy stuff! The cabinet on the bottom holds my most current projects.
Now I want to make the room pretty. The paint is already freshly touched up and I have some wall hangings to add along with a garland that I’d like to make. In the weeks to come….
