Nordic Stars
I like to add something handcrafted to my home every Christmas. Stockings, birds, villages, trees, wall hangings…you know…just stuff.
And this year it is……drumroll….
Nordic Stars
I saw these a few years ago on some blog or another and thought that I should make them but then I thought I should make something else. Sometimes, that’s how it goes. Until a friend in my “Sew Cool and Crafty” workshop brought several of the stars that she had just finished for our “show and tell”. That little display piqued my interest.
I started making the stars when my daughter was visiting–she asked me why I was making Ninja stars. Ha!
They are kinda easy but sometimes I’m a slow learner. I made 15 Nordic stars and watched the YouTube video 15 times.
There are many different versions out there. A lot of them claim no sewing just a lot of pressing with the iron and folding. I like to sew. So that’s what I went with. This version starts out with sewing tubes of fabric, turning them inside out, pressing, then folding.
Turning tubes inside out has always been very fiddly to me. And frustrating. But not anymore because I have these great little tools I use now. The end of the fabric tube has to be sewn shut so I just added 1/2″ to my strips and stitched the ends closed with a 1/4″ seam. Stuck the little tool in and Voila! Perfectly turned tubes!
And those little gadgets are called Tube Turners. * The one at this link isn’t the same as I have but it’s close and it serves the same purpose. I bought these when I was making a lot of softies and I was turning the fiddly little pieces right side out.

(I like the word “fiddly”. I think it’s quite descriptive for all those little crafty things that take way too long to complete!)
I digress.
I made 15 Nordic stars.
The first four matched one of my Christmas quilts I made a few years ago.
I got the quilt out just to make sure I remembered which fabric I used and Athena said “Mine”.
I decorated two windows with the Nordic Stars.
My Creative Cave (office/sewing room/crafting space/music room/studio)
And the Dining Room
I have five stars left and a lot more windows! Guess I’ll be watching that YouTube video a few more times!

Love them. I used to make them with my students (5th graders) every year when we did a unit on Christmas around the world. Only we used strips of paper. Thankfully I had a grandparent of a student who taught the entire class and talked about how she celebrated Christmas in Norway as a child. Really enriched the learning of how to make the stars.
I’ve been wanting to try these again, only with fabric. Yours turned out awesome. Love your red and white table runner and Athena’s quilt ~ lol ~ too. Enjoy making more.
Hi Pam! I never made them from paper. I would probably have folded them the wrong way! Thanks for all of your comments on the table runner and Athena’s new bed! Always love to hear from you!
