National Quilting Month
In honor of National Quilting Month I have decided to work on ALL of my unfinished quilts. And not start new ones this month! And I have made so much progress.
I have four quilts that are in various degrees of the quilting process. (Plus a FPP piece that I started last month as a wall hanging which I will have finished shortly and will post about in future weeks.)
The “Tell me a Story” Quilt has got to be the longest UFO for me. I started it in August 2017 using FPP stars, a needle turn under moon applique, and raw edge applique for the rabbits.
I had grand plans of hand embroidery for the details and finishing it with free motion quilting.
The rabbits are supposed to be dazzled by shiny bright fairies. Actually created the fairies and used raw edge applique to attach them.
That’s when the problems started. The fairies wouldn’t stick. Perhaps too many layers of fabric in each fairy? I even used fabric glue. Then when I tried to embroider the faces, they disintegrated!
No matter what I did, they just got worse. I made many unsuccessful attempts.
So this week, I cut out the fairies. And patched. Which was a problem since I have very little of the night time sky fabric left. But I feel like I can make a fresh start.
Still pondering options for this quilt. It might end up being two wall hangings since the starry night fabric is no longer available. This quilt has been really bugging me so It felt good making this much progress.
Next up, the scrappy quilt I started many months ago. 2 1/2″ unfinished blocks made up of denim and cotton. Will finish at 60″ by 60″. Here is my granddaughter Piper modeling the quilt for me last week.
And five days later I only have four rows to add! Thirty rows with 30 blocks each.
I did some “in the ditch” quilting on my first of two Moda Blockheads 3 quilt which I’m calling “Ground control”.
I really have problems keeping my stitching in the seams and this was good practice. I plan to put more quilting in the gray blocks and borders. Even bought a book about machine quilting designs by Christa Watson for inspiration.
And the fourth quilt project is the second Moda Blockheads 3 quilt. I finally received the fabric to finish it and will start on that before the end of March. I feel like I’m really moving forward for National Quilting Month! By the way, National Quilting DAY is Saturday, March 20th. A good day to quilt!
