Moda Block Heads 3
For today’s Quilty Thursday I have two more blocks completed on the Moda Block Heads 3 QAL.
For block 43 from Corey Yoder, “Corner Delight”, I used Beech Tree Lane Handmade’s method to make two sets of the “Make Eight Half Square Triangles” and one of the “Four at a Time“. 20 HSTs. Along with my Quilt in a Day 6 1/2″ Triangle Square Up Ruler, these bits and pieces went together relatively quickly. (Relatively–nothing is actually quick in quilting)
But the four “stitch and flip” squares to make diamonds didn’t turn out accurate even with the fancy schmancy “Mini Simple Folded Corners” ruler. Scheesch.
Putting all the bits and pieces together took a very long time and I was very careful to make sure all my HSTs were headed in the correct direction. Although I wasn’t happy with my diamonds, I was able to get them all straightened out and keep the points and still ended up with a 12 1/2″ unfinished square. And I NEVER had to use the ripper! That’s a first! I usually manage to put one of those HSTs in the wrong direction. While it was time consuming I like how the block turned out.
Next up was from Sherri McConnell, “Community”. This was a bunch of flying geese. While the geese can be formed into all kinds of cool patterns by using colors in different ways, I’m running out of fabric. I already had six geese in different colors left from a quilt I made Jes a few years ago, Sky Quilt. Using a pattern I purchased from Zen Chic plus the same “Spotted” fabric and white kona cotton.
So all I had to do was make two more and put them together. My “Community” block is just a bunch of happy colors! Happy geese!
Here’s my quilt thus far. In no particular order. It’s a hot mess of colors and shapes.
I’ll put the 6″ blocks in groups of four to create 12″ blocks. then I will add a dark border around each 12′ block. That should help control the craziness.
There are only TWELVE blocks left in this Quilt along. Whenever I do one of these QALs I start questioning towards the end, why do I keep getting into them? Then I have to remind myself how much I have learned with each one. Paper Piecing! EPP! Working with curved pieces! Embroidery! And too many little helpful hints to count. I would definitely recommend that a new quilter sign up for one of these challenges. So much to learn with excellent instructors.
But I am telling myself….NO MORE! Until I get a few other quilts made that I have designed in my head. Then…..maybe Moda Block Heads 5!
