Kit-Kat Needs a New Outfit
One of the UFOs I found while cleaning closets, and boxes, and baskets, and bins, was a cap that I had abandoned to the bottom of my embroidery basket. I had made the outside of the cap, the lining and the bill. I started making the cap after I saw a hat with embroidered flowers and was quite smitten. I decided to make my own. I don’t know why I quit the embroidery part.
After uncovering the project, I finished the embroidery. And then went to stitch the lining and the exterior of the cap together. I tried it on first and thought to myself, I will never wear this. The bill was enormous. Plus there was supposed to be a big bow in the back. Me with a giant bow–although I see that bows are very stylish now, it’s just not me.
So why am I finishing it?
I recently gave myself permission to NOT complete projects that I have started. I’m goal oriented and am only happy when I reach the goal. But I don’t have to do that anymore. A project can now go into the trash. Which is a big step in my own mental health!
Okay, so I am not finishing the cap but the embroidery was too nice to abandon.
I turned it into a new dress for Kit-Kat. And who is Kit-Kat?
You may remember (or not) that I purchased the Kit-Kat pattern from Wee Wonderfuls during the 2023 black Friday sale. I’ve made several of her sweet softies in years past and thought the kitten was adorable.
I followed the pattern very closely except I replaced the embroidered eyes with safety eyes and then the embroidered nose with a little heart-shaped wool felt piece. Plus I added those cute pink cheeks. Oh yeah, I also drew on eyebrows. Because all cats have eyebrows. Not.
I made most of those changes (especially the addition of eyebrows) because I wasn’t crazy about this new softie. I think it might be the shape of her head–maybe it’s just a little too oblong? So I didn’t even post here about her. I made her a little white tee shirt from the pattern and it turned out really bad.
Here is Kit-Kat a few months ago with all the other softies. (And Athena)
Maybe Kit-Kat just needed some more clothes. And I had that nice embroidery! I was inspired by Fernie Fox’s dress–another Wee Wonderful pattern.
I saved the embroidered piece of the cap and cut the rest of it up, then stitched it all together to make her a little outfit, complete with some coordinating pants from a small bit of my precious Ruby Star Society fabric.
And here is her little dress. And her little pants, the pants pattern comes with Kit Kat.
Now that Kit-Kat is spruced up, she looks a lot better. But there is still something–maybe it’s that weird smile!
While I will probably make more Kit-Kats in the future, my sewing machines are now packed away and all the handcrafted softies are in a big box being shipped to their new home–my daughter’s house.
The softies and I are all headed for new adventures.
