Have a Witchy Halloween, Week 2
Soooooo..last Tuesday I posted about my 2019 Halloween costume.
I’m going as a witch. And, of course, I’m making my costume! I’m using some projects from Sew4Home.com And I’m dragging you along.
The first thing I decided to do was order new fabric! And you know that took a week to come in! Sooooo….I had to start with a project that I had all the materials available for. And that was the dead roses.
The instructions call for melting fabric with a candle. Organza or any polyester. Doesn’t that sound like fun????
After I cut out all the pieces for my dead roses, I wisely moved this project into the kitchen. Not quite as many surfaces that would catch on fire!
I set up just like Sew4Home.com suggested. Little candle and aluminum foil. I brought my spray bottle that I use for my plants in for possible combustion.
I had to turn the A/C off because it blew the flame around and the fabric wouldn’t melt. (I know, you are thinking, why do you have the A/C on in October? Cause it’s still close to 90 degrees in Central Florida!)
I only had one minor fire! Did not have to call the fire department!
Terry came home at one point and said “What are you doing?” and I said “melting fabric”. And he just continued on through to the next room. Guess he’s getting used to the strange projects I pull together.
Then I stacked all the pieces into three different roses, stitched them together and finished them off with a button.
I have to admit that I really enjoyed making these “dead roses”. And they are perfect!
So the fabric came in while I was out of town and I got right to work on the witch’s hat when I got back. That was Monday morning. I knew that there was NO WAY I was going to get the hat done before I was posting here. So this is kind of a status report.
Again, this was fun. I mostly make quilts and bags. This was something different. Do I want to specialize in costumes now? No. It’s just fun to get out of the “box” once in awhile.
I’ve followed the instructions from Sew4Home.com pretty closely so far. I’m now to the point that I’m putting floral wire in the pointy hat part. I am a little dubious on how that will work out. But I will try it.
The hat brim also had floral wire added. I was a wee bit doubtful about that, too, but before I stitched the wire on the brim, it was flopping in my face when I tried it on. You have to use a BIG zig zag stich to sew the wire on. I did that very slowly. Cause I’ve had lots of needles break from running over pins. Who knows what would happen when running over wire! I didn’t want to lose an eye! (Although that would have been a great part of a witch’s costume!)
Here are a couple selfies of me in the hat…
OMG! I love that skeleton damask fabric. Totally worth the wait for it to arrive!
There are still many steps to go. Next I have to cover up the wire with double fold bias tape. And then put wire in the pointy hat. And then there’s a couple more things….blah…blah….blah.
One final pic. Here’s the hat so far, the dead roses, and my new familiar, Spooky.
Spooky is very black so she doesn’t photograph well. (Can you tell that I LOVE Halloween!)
Yikes, come back next week and see what else I might have finished. Or not. But Spooky is my new best friend. Especially cause she doesn’t require kitty litter but everytime I see her from the corner of my eye I think….I have a cat! A very cool BLACK cat!

Love the dead roses! The hat is going to be cute also.
The Christmas quilt wall hanging is cute! You’re way ahead on prepping for the season.
Thanks Kaye for your kind comments and reading my little blog!
