Fall Into a Quilt-A-Long Block 5 — Applique Version
Designer Kathleen McMusing last week created two different designs for block 5 of the Fall Into a Quilt-A-Long. One was pieced and the other applique.
I did the pieced version but I was a bit disappointed with how it turned out. Nothing wrong with the design, I think if I had picked better colors and prints, it would have been okay.
It’s just a wee bit blah where all the other blocks have been bright and cheerful…
I was just going to live with it but all the other blocks are so much prettier that I decided to make the appliqué version with some happier fabrics.
This was fun. First I made the four blocks with the acorns then sliced them in half and joined with a different pair. Have to admit that I cut two of the background fabrics too small but was able to work with them. Everything matched up pretty well except for the top of the stems but I can probably fix that when I stitch the edges down.
I used Heat ‘n Bond Lite which is my usual fusible web. And it didn’t stick. That is not typical for Heat ‘n Bond Lite. It was coming up everywhere—especially when I sliced the acorns in half. I’m waiting to stitch the edges when I quilt them to the batting and I think I’ll use a satin stitch just to make sure all the edges do not unravel.
This block 5 is SO much better!
And here’s all the blocks I’ve done so far. I’ll probably use the pieced acorn for a pillow.
Block 6 comes out next Tuesday!

Love your blocks. The larger acorn can be nicely embellished with some quilting! I love the little acorns, but hate when the bond doesn’t stick – I think the life of the glue (how old your fusible is) or the treatment of the fabric can sometimes lead to the trouble.

Thank you so much for commenting. I loved both blocks. I just should have used a brighter fabric for the larger acorn. I love the idea of embellishing with quilting. I plan to learn free motion quilting this year and this would look great with variegated quilting thread! And I agree. I think the fusible must be old. The pie didn’t hold down for block 6. I did a blanket stitch around it and I’m hoping that the heat ‘n bond lite will still keep the pieces from fraying.
