Face coverings and other stuff
I thought I’d start out today talking about masks. Not this kind.
I’ve made a bunch of masks for many people. Daughter Jes also made some and didn’t like them and had resorted to wearing bandannas. So when I saw this tutorial on Sew4Home.com for the VersaWrap, I dug out the little bit of knit fabric that I have and made one.
It can also be worn as a neck covering, a headband, or a head wrap. During a FaceTime session with Jes, her husband Andrew, and her sister-in-law Pam, I demonstrated the versatility of the versawrap and they all said “WE WANT ONE!”
Knit fabrics and I don’t get along, but this is such an easy pattern that I had no trouble and sent them off to the family in DC.
They said that they are smiling in this selfie!
Pam’s was a little too tight and Jes’s was a little too big. Andrew’s was just right! I’ve ordered three more jersey knit prints and one solid for lining and will be making more of these.
And speaking of ordering things….
We have one local quilt shop and it’s closed for now. So I’m ordering on line. Along with everyone else in the country! I bought some outdoor fabric to recover cushions back on April 10th from Fabric.com. It came in on April 23rd. In “normal” times it usually takes a week. On the website, they did say that it would take 30 days so this was actually fast! I also ordered fabric from the Fat Quarter Shop and BusyBeeFabricCo., an Etsy shop, early last week. The FQ order hasn’t shipped but I did get the Etsy package yesterday On the other hand, I ordered from Hawthorne Supply on Sunday morning and got an email in the afternoon that it had already been picked up by USPS! I’ve had the same issues with Amazon. Our UPS guy told Terry that he is busier delivering packages now than at Christmas! I’m not complaining, I’m adjusting. “Next Day Shipping” has a new reality!
And back to my problems with sewing with knits. I’ve been doing research and discovered that Baby Lock is offering 60 days of free sewing classes. Visit http://babylock.com/60-days-free. I’ve watched the first two “Sewing with Knits” classes. These are usually $19.99 each. And the lesson I learned from these two? I need a Serger! The third class is supposed to cover sewing knits with a regular sewing machine. Doing that one later today!
And more free learning. Interested in music? Fender is offering 3 months of free classes. Just go to Fender/play and sign up. You can take guitar, bass, or ukulele. And you don’t have to stick with one class. I started out with the ukulele lessons then borrowed a guitar and am switching between the two. The classes are good. They assume that you are a complete beginner so are very slow–and short!
Interested in exercises? You can download the Peleton app and workout for free for 60 days. I’ve been taking the yoga classes. They are really good, at my kind of price, and I can do them at home! I just saw on a commercial that Fitbit is also offering 90 days of free classes–I will check that one out and let you know!
And there are so many free quilt-a-longs going on now. I’ve been doing the Moda Blockheads 3 since that started. (Should have three blocks ready for Thursday’s post!) You can jump in anytime. Free.
Also doing the Norah Quilt on Sunny Day Supplies. This is also a fabric and notions shop with the absolutely cutest stuff I’ve ever seen. As soon as I get over my current obsession with quilting and get back to making pouches, I want to order some of her zippers. Perfect finishing touch!
Here’s my Norah Quilt so far. I want to add about three more rows. It’s easy but it’s taking a lot longer than I expected!
Riley Blake has been demonstrating a new basic block every week on Instagram and . Amy Smart at Diary of a Quilter has also been demonstrating the blocks each week in 6″ and 12″ size. I’ve been following Amy Smart’s blog for quite some time and give her a lot of credit for my current quilting skills. Her tutorials are great!
And my all time favorite free site? The public library. I have downloaded so many books and have a bunch on ‘hold” as I wait my turn to read them. I’m reading more books than ever!
I miss people in our current “safer at home” but I’m anything but bored!
