DIY Pillowcase — Burrito Style
In an effort to spruce up our guest bedroom for our expected holiday visitors, I thought I’d make some new pillowcases using the Burrito Style method. I’ve read about the Burrito Style Pillowcase many times on several blogs. Easy. Quick. Your life will be changed. And Sew4home.com posted their version which made me really want to try it.
Sew4Home is one of my very favorite blogs. The tutorials are excellent and I’ve used many of them. But I had issues with this one. Sew4Home called it a beginner project. But I could not figure out how to make them and I’m not a beginner! I followed every step. Didn’t get it.
One of the comments on the Sew4Home post was to go to Missouri Star Quilts for their tutorial. Oh my. What a difference. The pillowcase really is easy once you get the hang of it. But even with this very clear video, I had to stop it and watch it a few times when it got to the part of making the roll. The confusing part is how to get the three sections lined up and turned into a burrito.
I’ve got a tutorial below. It works. But it is very difficult to just use photos to explain the procedure. I would highly recommend you lwatch the video tutorial from Missouri Star Quilts.
This pillowcase has three fabrics — Body, Cuff, and Flange. I used a 300 thread count 100% cotton sheet for the body. The cuff is quilting fabric from Jo-anne’s Fabrics, and the flange is “Little Miss Polka Dot” from the Moda Glamping line. (I used “Little Miss Polka Dot” a few years ago to make a picnic tote and loved it but I can’t find it online now so it may be discontinued. So sad.)
Here’s my attempt at the tutorial:
DIY Pillowcase — Burrito Style
Cut 41” x 27” rectangle from main body fabric
Cut 10” x 27” rectangle from cuff fabric
Cut 3” x 27” rectangle from flange fabric
Fold cuff fabric in half lengthwise wrong sides together and press
Fold flange fabric in half lengthwise wrong sides together and press
Unfold cuff fabric, lay with right side up
Take body fabric and lay flange fabric along the top edge. Right sides up for both pieces.
Line up the top of the body fabric and flange on the top edge of the cuff fabric. Right side of the cuff is up and against wrong side of body fabric.
Roll the body fabric very tightly until it fits into the cuff piece. In this picture the flange and top edge of the body is already aligned with the top of the cuff. The body fabric is rolled up into the top half of the cuff.
Fold the bottom half of the cuff piece over the roll and bring it to the top edge of the cuff fabric. Line all five layers together—cuff, body, flange and then cuff—and pin.
Stitch ¼” from edge.
Pull the roll of fabric out of one end of the burrito.
Press.
Do French seams on the two raw edges.
Viola!
Beautiful pillowcases! Easy and quick once you get it figured out!
