Binding
I was trying to think of a clever title for this post. Like ‘bless be the ties that bind’. And I even did a google search. Lots of binding stuff. Then I decided that I was wasting way too much time on a very trivial part of the post. I got other stuff to do!
So I’m moving on and telling you my story….
I’m finishing up a quilt for granddaughter Adley. I’ve only been working on it since April. This thing has taken me FOREVER!
And it’s still not quite ready to reveal so I thought I’d show you how I make the binding for the quilt. Cause it’s the really important finishing touch. (And I’m stalling for another week. or two. or three.)
You can buy quilt binding at any fabric shop. There’s lots of colors but it’s so much better to use a fabric that coordinates with the quilt.
And it’s easy.
Tedious.
But easy.
To make a nice binding, you need 2 1/2″ strips. One yard of 40″ fabric makes approximately 12 yards of 2 1/2″ strips. And how do you figure out how much do you need for a quilt? Take the length of all four sides and add about 12″ to connect the binding. That’s what you need for the finished binding. The quilt I’m finishing now is 54″ x 84″. So I need (54 x 2) + (84 * 2) + 12. 288. Got it?
Never mind. Just make a whole lot of binding and finish that quilt! It will be spectacular.
Cut a bunch of 2 1/2″ strips from your 40″ wide fabric.
You can connect them together by just sewing a simple 1/4″ seam but I like to make a bias seam.
Like this….
Press those seams open and look how great this is!
Now just connect a whole bunch of strips together.
And press the connected strips in half.
Binding!
Not gonna even attempt to tell you how to sew it on the quilt. Hey I’m a beginner quilter. There’s a lot of other blogs out there that are a lot better at that than me….
Like Pretty Prudent. That’s the tutorial I use.
Oh gosh. This quilt turned out so nice. (And I’ve noticed that I’ve been using the word gosh an awful lot lately)
I’m sure I’ll show you more on this quilt.
Later.
Perhaps much later.

Her new favorite blanket. We have to put it on the ground to play on and it gets dragged around the house. Thanks again Grandma!!
So glad Adley likes the quilt, Lauri. Now I only need to make 5 more!
