And I decided to make a bunny
I made a bag….
Then I made a bunny…to match the bag….cause bags are always better with a matching friend!
Introducing “Blue Jean Baby Queen”….
With an adorable pom pom tail and button jointed arms and legs.
And then I fell down the “rabbit hole” (Ha!) I became obsessed with making the perfect bunny!
Unfortunately, the next rabbit was not the PERFECT bunny. I put her ears on upside down. And her eyes are a wee bit too far to the sides. She looks a bit dazed and confused. Don’t you think? I’ve named her Daphne. Since she wasn’t perfect I had to make another one….
But smaller because the bigger ones weren’t difficult enough. “Little Miss Gingham” was a bit of trouble. You will note that I didn’t joint her arms. And they are a bit askew.
And then I thought perhaps if I didn’t make the head and body in one piece, that maybe, just maybe it would be easier. It wasn’t. “Miss Pinkie” was really difficult. That’s why she has a pretty ribbon on. To cover up the Frankenstein stitches!
The whole family, thus far….
They all have adorable pom pom tails.
They suggested we leave the sewing room. Mmmmmm, okay.
They hung out by the pool.
Blue Jean Baby Queen suggested we go for a boat ride.
Then she helped me pull some pots out of the garden shed so I could do some planting later this week. (Can you tell that Blue Jean Baby Queen is my favorite? )
Little Miss Pinkie checked out the new swing set. (okay. Pinkie is close to favorite. even with her Frankenstein stitches.)
NOT THE FIRE PIT! (Don’t do it Blue Jean Baby Queen–really, I like you best!)
Meanwhile, Little Miss Gingham was in the screen room checking stuff out. (Poor thing with her arms all out in limbo.)
Okay. So besides posing softies in places for a strange photo shoot, what am I up to?
I have wanted to learn to design my own softie patterns. I made this shark pattern that was featured on SewMamaSew.com a few years ago. Updated February 28, 2020–SewMamaSew.com is no longer live. You can find the shark tutorial here!
And I have made many mermaids for the granddaughters.
I designed the patterns. But they are all “flat” designs. I want to add some depth but so far have not been able to come up with the correct dimensions.
So I figured if I made enough softies it would just come to me. Seriously, that’s how I learned to make the different bags, totes, baskets, and boxes that I have all over the place.
Today’s project started out with this adorable Spring Bunny pattern. The directions are very clear. But after I had added all the appendages, I couldn’t get the bunny to turn right side out. I was so frustrated that it went into the trash.
After many hours of first sad bunny spending time in the trash I said to myself, can this bunny be saved???. After careful examination I said to self, Nope. Then I calmly snipped off it’s stuffed arms and legs and pulled out all the fiberfill. Sorry little bunny. (Come on people. It’s fabric. Not a real life rabbit!)
Which led me to adding the legs and arms AFTER the bunny was turned right out side out and stuffed. SO MUCH EASIER!
And my friend Annie gave me all these glorious buttons a few months ago. Such an assortment! Big buttons. Little buttons. Sparkly buttons. Weird buttons. I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do with them and then it was O M GEE. Looks at all those eyes and joints!
One of the many blogs that I follow is Ann Wood Handmade. (Her dolls and softies are amazing!) Her latest post mentioned a new challenge the Hundred Day Project. For 100 days you are supposed to upload pics to Instagram from a project that you are working on–yeah, you guessed it–for 100 days. I am very goal oriented. If I have a deadline, heaven and hell won’t get in my way. So I KNOW that this is the perfect challenge for me. And my project is not one large item but many wee tiny bits and pieces. I am going to learn how to design beautiful and wonderful and amazing softies. In 100 days. And how will you know? I’ll be posting on Instagram what I’m working on starting TODAY for 100 days.
(Will I actually post everyday? MMMMMMM. Maybe. Maybe not. But I will try.)
While I won’t have 100 softies finished in 100 days because that’s not the goal, I bet there will be a whole lot of small soft creatures waiting for homes at the end of the project. And I WILL be really tired of making small adorable stuffed items!
If you want to follow along, my Instagram name is DesignsKTG. The hashtag is #the100dayproject. And, of course, I’ll be posting here at least weekly!
Hope you follow along! (Hope I succeed beyond my imagination!)

I’ll be watching to see what softies you come up with. Nice swing! Kaye
Thanks Kaye, more softies on the way!
