And National Quilting Month is OVER!
I didn’t get one quilt finished even though I spent all my sewing time in March piecing and quilting in honor of “National Quilting Month”.
But I made substantial progress on three out of the four quilts that were in various stages of stitching.
Here’s my Scrappy Times 3 front on Sunday.
I probably would have that one finished had I just went with a plain backing. But I decided to use up even more scraps. So there would be even more scrappy goodness! Most of the pieces are from the Cotton & Steel line of fabric. I had so much of that hoarded away! The borders are from a quilt kit that I never used.
My typical batting is “Warm n’ Natural”. I stick with one brand just so I know what is in my basket of batting bits. But I saw this Hobbs Heirloom Cotton Fusible Batting on Instagram. And decided that “National Quilting Month” was the time to try new stuff!
Both sides are fusible on this batting. I have used fleece that is similar for pillows and wall hangings. I wasn’t sure how it would work on a larger quilt but the directions said that I could use parchment paper on one side and it wouldn’t fuse. So that’s what I did. Pressed the batting on the wrong side of the front of the quilt. Then flipped it and fused the back on. So much easier than pin or spray basting. I’m eager to see how it shrinks up when I wash and dry the quilt.
And then I started quilting with a spiral pattern. I have done this before. And it turned out great. I made “Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright” for a friend’s 60th birthday and I really loved how it turned out.
But the Scrappy Times 3 quilting is very wonky. A little disappointed but I’m not so disappointed that I would pull out all the stitching I’ve already done! (Hoping it’s not as noticeable after the batting shrinks!)
I wanted to do a dense quilting stitch because I’m a little concerned about all those seams between the cotton and the denim might pull apart. The more quilting, the stronger the quilt.
Anyhow….
I checked out what “National Month” April represents. Just in case I want to get obsessed with another trend. Although April has lots of causes, I thought I should probably hang with “Lawn and Garden Month” cause it will be too hot to work out in that yard in May!
