Moda Block Heads 3 Catch up!
I was way behind on the block heads QAL because I really didn’t want to do block 37. It has 12 squares and each of those squares have four “stitch & flip” corners. Which I now know are also called “folded corners”. Doesn’t matter what they are called, I can never get them as accurate as they should be. And they are wasteful. You only use half of the square that you cut. And they take a lot of extra time.
I committed myself to doing all 56 blocks. I procrastinated which is what I do when I really don’t want to do something.
Then I saw this ruler by Doug Leko called “Mini Simple Folded Corners” which would address all the above issues. So I ordered it. Because I like to get new tools. (you might call them toys!) Or I thought I ordered it but after waiting a week for it to arrive I went out to Amazon and found that it was still in the shopping cart. So I ordered it again. For real this time. It arrived. I couldn’t understand the directions at all. So I tossed it on my desk for future research. By then I was about 3 weeks behind.
Finally. Got the ruler out. Still didn’t understand the directions. Watched three YouTube videos. Oh. I get it now. Although it wasn’t quite what I expected becasue it was still wasteful but I was able to do all the folded corners on all 12 squares. (I actually did 15 because I had to throw out three that I messed up.)
It’s done. Time to move on! With four much simpler blocks! And one hard one.
Block 38 by Stacy Iest Hsu is called “Fractured Rainbow”. It’s basically four little log cabins. Easy-Peasy. I made it into a 6 1/2″ unfinished block.
“Mad about Plaid” is by Robin Pickens and is Block 39. Simple, but lots of pieces. I made it 12 1/2″ unfinished because I really liked the pattern.
Block 40 was another easy one and I did it in the 6 1/2″ unfinished size. “Strings” by Janet Clare was fun. Just a bunch of strips stitched onto backing and then stitched together. I think it turned out very happy!
Jan Kingwell brought the applique block “Bachelor Buttons” for block 41. She does a very complicated applique method. I just use the raw edge method with Heat ‘n Bond Lite. I like to try new ideas but can’t convince myself I need to learn this technique. I also did this in the smaller size. In my world, Bachelor Buttons are blue. So my block is blue. My favorite color.
“Starburst” by Joanne Figuaro is block 42. Lots of small pieces but these are HSTs and I like doing those since I have my “Quilt in a Day Triangle Square Up Ruler“. (This ruler really does save time!) Makes it so much easier. I did this one in the 12” unfinished size.
And just like that I’m caught up! Well, except for the one that was released yesterday. I can’t get them made and photographed quick enough to get the Wednesday release put up by Quilty Thursday. Plus I play with a ukulele group on Wednesday. If you ever wanted to take up an instrument and have no experience, the ukulele is for you. So many people are beginners that want to learn and so many people are experts that want to share their experiences. I’m kind of in the middle. It’s fun. And I get to sing and no one complains!
And here are the most recent six blocks.
I’m getting to the end of my “spotted” fabric from Zen Chic. I’m at the point of needing to order more or make the last 14 blocks in the smaller size! I did check at the Fat Quarter Shop and they still have it in stock.
Decisions, decisions…..
