Moda Block Heads 3, another four blocks finished!
I’ve got 3 quilts going right now. I’m not saying that to impress you. Anyone that quilts has at least that or more. I’m probably a slacker in the quilty world! The nice thing is, I don’t have deadlines for any of them. I would like to get the Christmas Hexie quilt done before the holiday, but it doesn’t really matter. Moda has another quilt-a-long coming up in October and I think I’ll skip that one!
The Moda Block Heads 3 Quilt-a-Long won’t even be completely distributed until February. I do like doing the weekly block so I can see the blocks that other quilters are making on FB. So I try to keep up. This week I finished up four of the Moda Block Heads 3 blocks. This is a very fun quilt sampler although it can be frustrating but I’ve enjoyed following along. Today I’m reporting on my experience with blocks 33 through 36.
Brigget Heitland’s Block 33 “Walking in Circles” caused a bit of an uproar on the world wide web. Just like everyone else that quilts, or sews. or crafts, she got Pinspiration from Pinterest and created a very cool circular block. Unfortunately, the person that created the original block that was on Pinterest was not very happy about it. Comments were made. Ugliness ensued. Moda took the block down. Yikes! There’s a different version of block 33 out there now. But I did the original version that came out in the 6″ size. I think I had it finished before the ugliness started. I really like this block. A lot of FB comments were that it was a challenge because it was curved. Curves don’t scare me. Just pin it — a lot — and go slow. I think if you make toys or clothes you get exposed to curves more than a typical quilt. I want to put four of these together and make a pillow cover. Just looking for the right fabric.
The next up was the 125-piece block from Lisa Bonnegan, “Entitlement”. (Okay, I did see a comment on FB that there were 137 pieces.) I have no idea which was correct. Doesn’t matter. That amount of bits was way too many. I did the 12″ version of this block. I have to say that this was REALLY DIFFICULT! And it took me a very long time. First I thought that if I just take one bit at a time, not a problem. No.
I used the Flying Geese template from Quilt in a Day. There are two sizes on this ruler and I was able to use the smaller one twelve of the flying geese.
I also bought a rotating mat from Fiskar. I highly recommend the Flying Geese template. Not sure the rotating mat was worth the money though. I could just as easily turn my smaller mat around on the table. Oh well, maybe I will come to love it.
I did make a big mistake right at the beginning and used the wrong colors for the corner blocks for the center star. Not the designers fault. I didn’t check the colors. Or maybe I was thinking about something else. Who knows? But these colors made it a cross instead of a star. I love stars!
Even after I took this photo, I didn’t notice the mistake. I stitched on the six side flying geese before I said to myself “that’s supposed to be a star!!!!” I actually thought about it one night while I couldn’t sleep. I ripped it out. Here is the corrected and finished version! Much better.
Lissa Alexander designed the next block, “Coming Together”. This looked easy so I did it in the 6″ size. I had some minor issues with the “stich and flip” corners but most of them are lined up okay. Little issues like this are never noticed on a final quilt.
Block 36, Broken Dishes by Laurie Simpson, is my final block for this week. Not too difficult.
Twenty-one blocks to go!
