All the Hearts!
My sewing and crafty feeds on Instagram are FULL of Valentines ideas and projects.
Last week I received an email asking about the log cabin heart block that I designed. I quickly searched through my blog for all the links and sent them to her. Then she emailed me back–thank you but the quilt she wanted to create was on someone else’s blog.
Oh.
But after doing all the searching, I thought I’d bring those heart quilt blocks all together. Here in one post. Then I can send the links all together. If ever asked again!
What started this heart block was a calendar quilt I created several years ago. I made a different block for each month and for February I designed this Log Cabin Heart Block. The tutorial isn’t all that great. But it makes a nice 20″ block.
Then about four years later I decided to update the pattern with a much better tutorial and PDF. You can find the instructions in this post, Two DIY Heart Blocks. One block is based on the log cabin layout, the second uses strips of fabric.
I’ve used both versions in several projects.
I’ve made more but I just wanted to give you a sample so you could see how versatile this block is.
In the above pic, the heart blocks are set on their sides, but you can go to this Heart Quilt Post where I explain how to turn them so their points are down. This method can be used for both style of blocks–log cabin and strips.
My most recent project using the strips version, is the In a Heartbeat Quilt. Finished this one in 2024.
It started out as a nap quilt but kept growing. Now it is queen sized-made for our guest bedroom in our last home but I only have a twin sized day bed in our second bedroom in DC. But it fits nicely folded in half.
I had planned on writing a tutorial for the finished quilt and had spent several hours in Illustrator to create the graphic. I hit a weird keystroke combination. The entire directory was gone. I felt that was a message to move on! Perhaps instructions are not something I should be working on!
More posts to come for celebrating the day of Hearts!

Thank you for your kind comments Pamela! I always love to hear from you. I often write the tutorials so I don’t forget how to make the project. I’m glad others benefit from the posts!
