Halloween Hexies
I usually have a tote full of bits of fabric by my chair that I can turn into hexies. Some fussy cut. All different sizes. It’s an amazingly easy peasy hand stitching project I can do while Terry is watching football or golf or some Western from the 60s. I can cut and stitch and make derogatory comments about his choice of shows. They are also a perfect project to work on while on a LOOOONG road trip. (and there might be snarky remarks about his driving!)
Some day. I will turn all of them into amazing projects. Just don’t know what yet!
Then I started hexies with a purpose–Halloween! I really didn’t know what I was making all the hexies for—a quilt? a table runner? trick or treat bags?
Then @sewfoxylady started a #100days100hexies challenge on Instagram. Thought I might as well join up since I was making a bunch of them. There is a different theme every week. For 100 days. The challenge is already half through. If you already follow me on Instagram, you can just ignore most of the following!
Week 1, was Hi, it’s me! Have to admit, I didn’t realize that I was supposed to make hexies that fit that theme. Since I live most of the time in Florida, I probably should have made a bunch of hexies that were water themed. Like manatees, dolphins, mermaids, and floods. Instead I posted the following picture and told Instagram a little about myself. After I caught on to the theme idea, I started trying to follow along.
(And I always tried to use my spooky hexies whenever possible!)
Week 2, Summer Vibes I didn’t have a lot of scraps at my summer place in North Dakota so decided that flowers were my summer vibe.
Week 3, Notions, Again, I didn’t have a lot of notions. So I made a little collage with what I had. (And that song “Rock the Boat” by the Hues Corporation kept running through my mind that week…..”I’d like to know where you got the notion…..”, You are now singing it in your head, right?)
Week 4, Flower Power More flowers!
Week 5, Rainbows Adley painted this canvas for me. It’s kinda sort of a rainbow. So I made some hexies that were ROY G. BIV and went with it!
Week 6 Pawsome, Piper started this artwork for me. (Neither painting was finished before I left ND but I still hung them on the wall.) And of course, there’s nothing more pawsome than my smitten kitten and black cat hexies!
I kept up with the challenge until Week 7. The theme was Love. I have lots of love but I was cleaning up from Hurricane Idalia so didn’t get an opportunity to make the appropriate hexies, I just continued making black cats, pumpkins and spiders which probably weren’t the love they wanted–but I came back strong the next week!
Week 8 I-Spy. I Spy with my little eye all the spooky hexies! Boo!
This week (week 9) is magic week. And I can’t think of anything clever for magic that I can pull out of my hexie bag of tricks. Wwwwwait, bag of tricks! Oh yes, white rabbits out of a hat!
While I’ve finished quite a bunch of Halloween hexies and have started sewing them together into what will probably turn into a Halloween quilt, it won’t be finished for this spooky season.
But there’s always next year!
