Quilts of Christmas Past
Went on a road trip and did NO SEWING FOR NINE DAYS! But I spent lots of time on Instagram checking out what all the quilters are doing. Am I the only sewist that hasn’t decorated for Christmas yet?
I did put all the fall decor away yesterday and pulled out my Christmas quilts. But that’s it. Then I started thinking about how many holiday quilts I might have made and had to spend some time on this blog to figure it out.
And the answer is NINE! I’ve kept four for myself and the rest have been gifts.
And now. I will share all of those quilts with you. Warning. This could be beyond boring!
The first. Made this one back in 2014. (The year that I became obsessed with cutting up fabric in little bits and sewing them back together.) An easy peasy patchwork. It’s almost a 9-patch except I cheated a little. I typically have a “theme” for my main tree every year and I think that was the year I had a white tree covered with red bulbs and candy canes. I, of course, called it my Candy Cane Quilt and you can read more about it on my old blog, KTGreenDesign.com.
Maggie was my model back then and really good at it. I could get her to do most any pose with a treat when she was young. As she got older, she got a little crankier every year. We lost Maggie when she was 18 years old and I still miss her. But she’s really sweet in this photo.
I didn’t make Christmas quilts in 2015 or 2016. But I went overboard in 2017. Decided that I would make holiday quilts as gifts. While I started in August, I was finishing the quilting on the last one on Christmas morning.
“Run Run Reindeer”, my own quilt design, went to Jes and Andrew.
I made the I Love Home BOM from JacquelinneSteves.com using holiday fabrics and gave it to Darin. Little side note, this is the festive fabric that I’m using for my Winter 2021 quilt.
I made two versions of the “I wish you a Merry Quilt-A-Long” quilt. The first went to Alan and Lauri and the second was a wedding gift for a friend.
Andy and Karen were given the “Oh Christmas Tree” quilt. That’s the one I was quilting in the wee hours of Christmas morning but I got it done in time for Christmas gift giving!
I made two quilts for ME in 2019. Both designs from JacquelynneSteves.com. The first was “Happy Little Things” quilt that was a free block of the month. I changed out the centers by designing a different gift for each block.
Then I made this one from another Jacquelynne Stevens pattern. (I obviously like her designs since I have actually made four of hers over the years!) It was the 2019 Mystery Christmas Quilt. You could only get the design if you belonged to her club. So I joined for a year. I also replaced the words on this one. I used my Cricut Maker to create the phrase “Be Merry and Bright”.
One final Christmas quilt. Perhaps my most ambitious! This is my own design. In 2020, I fussy cut and hand stitched all these little hexies then hand stitched it all together. I ended up machine quilting it since I wanted to make sure it held together! It was a good calm project for a very difficult year. This is my “Christmas Hexie Quilt”.
I have the beginnings of my 2021 Christmas quilt on the wall. Wasn’t able to work on it during the last week because of the big road trip we were on. But hope to have plenty done next week to reveal!
